LEVELS presents Holfeld’s renewed perspective on the city of Geneva, toward a deeper appreciation of overlooked urban spaces. In this body of work, attention turns to the quiet presence of functional structures—those often unnoticed elements that shape the everyday experience of the built environment.
LEVELS is a sensory-driven body of work rooted in Holfeld’s personal encounter with urban life. The exhibition presented six large-scale abstract images that focus on construction materials such as concrete, steel, rubber, and glass. These images isolate surfaces, patterns, and textures that are typically absorbed into the background of city life.
By concentrating on the utilitarian aspects of architecture, Holfeld draws on a distinct visual sensitivity—an ability to recognise patterns, embrace abstraction, and maintain deep focus on materials, colour, and spatial relationships. Through this process, surrounding visual noise is softened, allowing the underlying geometry and rhythm of the built environment to emerge.
The works were printed on micro-perforated contra vision vinyl, introducing an additional tactile and visual dimension. This material choice reinforces themes of resilience and endurance, echoing the durability of the construction materials depicted.
Together, the images create an immersive encounter. Their large scale and carefully framed geometries invite contemplation, producing a calm visual atmosphere while simultaneously activating the viewer’s imagination. In doing so, LEVELS offers a new way of seeing the built environment—transforming the overlooked structures of urban life into spaces for reflection, creativity, and sensory awareness.
LEVELS ran at the RHA Gallery in Dublin from February 27 to March 23, 2025.
