Commissioned by University College Dublin to commemorate Belfield 50, Conveying Space has been honoured with awards from 2024 Architecture Photography MasterPrize (Architecture MasterPrize), Tokyo International Foto Awards, PX3 Prix de la Photographie Paris Awards, The International Photography Awards, MonoVisions Black and White Photography Awards, and the Budapest International Foto Awards, capturing the atmospheric essence of UCD's architecture.
The series throws a spotlight on the dynamic interplay between structure and natural light and leads us to rediscover fleeting moments of visual connection, expertly brought to life through tightly cropped details. Through deliberate positioning and thoughtful framing, Holfeld unveils the nuances and complexities inherent in architecture, transcending its commercial appeal.
Holfeld deliberately opts for cloudless skies and high sun, setting the tone for his artistic approach and fundamentally transforming the architectural landscape. The resulting deep shadows and intense illumination expose well-defined lines and sharp geometric forms, turning the mundane into iconic graphical vistas. To achieve this, Holfeld extracts building elements from their context, zooms in on architectural intricacies, or isolates specific features, thereby crafting robust geometrical compositions that possess a life of their own. Everyday elements like steps and lampposts transcend their utilitarian roles, becoming two-dimensional embellishments, while segments of facades lose their scale, evolving into graphical abstractions.
In a dynamic and impactful reflection, Holfeld's images offer a fresh perspective on the architectural legacy of University College Dublin. By deconstructing the elemental components of its structures—rebar, concrete, and stucco—Holfeld reshapes our perception of these buildings. The intertwined narratives woven through his work illuminate the diverse history embedded within the campus walls. Today, beyond its physical existence, the university stands as a resilient symbol, telling the story of Ireland's rich cultural heritage and modern identity amidst the passage of time.
